The following facts and statistics lend evidence as to why people need and deserve a better solution for addressing mental health globally than the status quo.

Globally, according to the World Health Organization (WHO):

  • More than 1 billion people worldwide live with a mental disorder.
  • 12 billion productive work days are lost every year to depression and anxiety, at a cost of US $1 trillion.
  • Globally, suicide accounts for more than one in every 100 deaths and for each death there are 20 suicide attempts.
  • “On average, countries dedicate just 2% of their health budgets to mental health. More than half of mental health expenditure in low- and middle-income countries still goes towards psychiatric hospitals. In low-income countries there are little more than one mental health worker of any kind per 100 000 population, compared with more than 60 in high-income countries. Two-thirds of countries have just one psychiatrist to serve 200 000 or more people.”
  • Most people with mental health conditions do not receive formal mental health care. In all countries, gaps in service coverage are compounded by gaps in quality of care. Fewer than one in ten (9%) people with major depressive disorder have been estimated to receive minimally adequate treatment globally.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in 2023:

People Died by Suicide in 2023

Million Seriously Thought about Suicide

Million Made a Plan for Suicide

Million Attempted Suicide

According to the American College Health Association’s Spring 2025 National College Health Assessment, the top impediments to academic performance among American college students are procrastination, stress, anxiety, sleep difficulties and depression.

Life Church Buffalo

https://lifechurchbuffalo.com

If you feel called, your local church can be an excellent support for people on their mental health recovery journey. I began going to Life Church Buffalo in August 2025 and I absolutely love it. I felt at home the moment I walked into my first Sunday service at 11:30am (yes they have a time that lets you sleep in, whoo hoo!!).

T
he pastors are authentic image bearers of Jesus and greet you with open, non-judgmental arms. Pastor Pete and his wife and co-lead Pastor Kelly are warm, inviting and welcoming to people in all their gifts, flaws, similarities and differences. Life Church seeks to unite people, not divide as you see happening all-too-often on social media today. They have given me a church family and a tangible place to go to feel elevated, loved and nurtured as a follower of Jesus.

Life Church Buffalo has many life groups, as well as support groups that you can join and begin connecting with others. Click here to view Pastor Pete’s inspiring message about mental health and faith.
